Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit (GMIAU) mark their 30th birthday with this event looking back over their 30 years of delivering Justice, Rights and Resistance. Among the performances, speakers and discussion the event will feature a special performance of ‘Declaration’ by Kooj Chuhan and Tagné Tebu. Combining live music and projected visuals, they have collaborated with GMIAU and These Walls Must Fall to create this emotive work (more info below).  The event will look back on successful campaigns against racist immigration policies and discuss future challenges in the continued fight for immigration justice.

The special guest speaker will be Viraj Mendis on live link from Germany (whose anti-deportation campaign led to the founding of GMIAU). Our MC will be amazing playwright and poet Louise Wallwein MBE. Denise McDowell from GMIAU, These Walls Must Fall and others will also speak about their critically important campaigning and legal support work. We’ll also have music from renowned veteran campaigner and DJ Tony Openshaw! There will also be food and drink available for a donation. The event is organised in partnership with Metaceptive projects and media.

Declaration performance at HOME arts centre in Manchester

Declaration live video and music performance

A story of human rights, migration, campaigns and protests told through a live performance of global-jazz music and video projections. ‘Declaration’ combines poetic imagery with documentary narratives, featured as live visual projections from video artist Kooj Chuhan.  The musical compositions are specially created and performed by Tagné Tebu, a multi-instrumentalist with jazz, African, Latin and Indo-Arabic influences.  Expect sections of free improv, interactive video and audio loops, spoken polemics, multi-layered rhythms and evocative melodic structures.

Kooj Chuhan is a leading UK-based artist-activist.  He has exhibited at Arnolfini (Bristol), ICA (London), internationally including San Diego, Paris, New Delhi, Toronto. Among his achievements is an award for digital arts connecting refugees with climate change.  Tagné Tebu has a refugee background and many credits as composer, arranger, musical director and producer. His credits include work with world-music stars Amadou and Mariam.  ‘Declaration’ includes a mix of spoken monologues by detainees, human rights activists and legal case-workers reflecting on the themes of migration justice. It includes material from Angela Davis, Walter Rodney, Shami Chakrabarti, Viraj Mendis, Bridget Anderson, Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit and These Walls Must Fall campaign.

GMIAU: Supporting migration justice

Over the last 30 years, GMIAU has been at the forefront of the fight for immigration justice in Greater Manchester. We exist to unlock vital legal solutions so that people can live without fear, plan for their futures and put down roots in the UK. The Unit provides free, expert and caring immigration and asylum legal advice for all those who need it. We are the only specialist not-for-profit legal organisation in the North West.

All donations on the night will go directly to GMIAU. They will help them to continue their work, changing people’s lives, challenging the hostile environment and supporting migration justice.
